Dubai is set to add a major new environmental tourism attraction with the approval of Al Layan Oasis, a large-scale recreational and nature-focused development announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Spanning one million square metres, the project will feature a central lake covering more than 250,000 square metres and is designed to showcase the desert’s natural beauty while promoting sustainability, wellbeing, and quality of life. The oasis forms part of initiatives under the Dubai Municipality Blue and Green Roadmap 2030 and aligns with broader plans, including the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033.
Located about 50 minutes from the city centre, Al Layan Oasis will include 14 km of walking and cycling tracks, 1,000 parking spaces, and four themed zones, Gathering, Family, Camping, and Recreation, offering facilities such as amphitheatres, caravan sites, event spaces, and visitor education centres. The destination is expected to attract around 330,000 visitors annually.
Speaking on the project, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said that Dubai’s urban development is driven by a commitment to creating a sustainable environment and the highest quality of life for people, through an integrated model that places people at the centre of planning.
Officials say the project balances eco-tourism with conservation by expanding native planting, using sustainable infrastructure, and preserving the desert ecosystem. The development will also create public-private investment opportunities across 365,000 square metres.
Al Layan Oasis is part of Dubai’s ongoing strategy to invest in nature-led destinations that enhance liveability while strengthening its position as a global tourism and lifestyle hub.
